Improving an ageing smart home system
Like all technology, smart home systems (which are essentially dedicated computers) evolve at a fast rate. What may have been state of the art ten years ago is unlikely to be cutting edge today. That doesn’t mean that you should throw away the considerable investment you have already made in your smart home system though—there are things you can do to upgrade your system without costing the earth or causing major disruption to your home.
Faster central processor(s)
If your system is more than five years old, the chances are that the latest version of the central processor of your smart home system, whether its Crestron, Control4, Savant or another platform, is substantially faster than the best that was available when you had it installed. Replacing the processor with the latest equivalent will improve the performance (and often also the reliability) of your home technology. The whole system will simply feel more responsive to your control requests, and the extra capacity means multiple users simultaneously using the system will no longer put it under strain. In most cases it’s simply a case of swapping out the old controller for the new version and transferring all your programming—although you may also want to take advantage of the opportunity to enhance the programming and features to meet your current needs.
